Childbirth In Your Life and Around the World - childbirth in Netherlands

The Netherlands is the highest rate of home births in the world. 30 percent of all births take place at home . They believe that child birth is a natural, physical process, not a medical condition.  Doctors only intervene in high-risk cases or if complications arise during delivery. Dutch women decide whether they want a home or hospital delivery and  more than half of the women at my midwife's practice deliver at home. If a mother gives birth early in the day without complications at hospital, she and the baby may go home in as little as two hours.
In China, government promote the hospital birth. We think that it is saver for the both mother and baby. I never thought that give birth at home. All the prenatal examines have done by the doctors at hospital and mostly covered by healthy insurance. If a mother gives girth with out complications at hospital, at least stay 2 days in the hospital.

Hello again, Lucia! A couple of different articles that I read said that home births used to be the norm in China, but that most occur in hospitals now. They also said that the number of c-sections have increased to the point that some hospitals are doing c-sections 90%of the time. I didn't see anything that indicated when these changes began. Do you have any idea when the attitudes about home birth changed?

Hi Lucia!
I hadn't heard of homebirths either until the last few years. A lot of my friends are beginning to have babies so they have considered it. however, instead I think they compromise home births and hospitals. They use doulas, coaches and meditative practices to help them through the births and hold off on medicine as long as possible. I think they are trying to ensure the best development for their child by avoiding manufactured medicine and cold hospital environments.

Hello Lucia,
I really enjoy your blog and I am really suprise that this country has the highest home birth rate. I wonder why is that? Is it the choice of the people or are they force to do this?
